Free, no ads, no tracking: how?
"If it's free, you're the product." It's usually true. Here is exactly how METE0RA avoids it.
No server, no account
METE0RA has no server of its own. Your phone talks directly to the public weather services. There's no account to create, no login, no database with your name in it. Your places, settings and reminders stay on your device.
What leaves your phone
Only the coordinates of the places you look up, rounded to about 1 km, never your exact address. Like any internet connection, those services see your device's IP address, and that's all. No analytics, no crash reporters, no advertising IDs. Even the font is built into the app, so it never calls anyone just to draw text.
So who pays?
The forecasts are free thanks to open-data policies and to Open-Meteo, which is free for non-commercial apps. That's one more reason METE0RA will never show ads. What's left is time, and the cost of the app stores.
If METE0RA helps you, you can support it in the app, through Google Play or the App Store: 1 € a year, or once for life with the amount you choose. Supporters stop seeing the little reminders and just get a thank-you now and then. Everyone else gets the same app, with nothing locked.
